A Battery Stores Power. Solar and Storage Produce It.

A backup battery buys you hours. Paired with solar, the same battery refills itself every day — which is the difference between a cushion and control.

Homeowners increasingly call us asking for "a battery." It is a reasonable request, usually prompted by an outage that lasted longer than expected. But the word covers two very different propositions, and the distinction decides what you actually end up with.

What a battery on its own does

A battery with no solar attached is a container. It charges from the grid — power you bought at the going rate — and holds it until you need it. When the grid fails, it discharges.

That is genuinely useful. It is quiet, automatic, and it covers the gap. But understand its limits:

  • Everything in it was purchased. A grid-charged battery does not reduce what you buy; it shifts when you buy it.
  • It is finite. Once discharged, it refills only when the grid returns. During an extended outage, that is precisely when it cannot.
  • It does nothing the rest of the year. On the 360 days the grid is up, it sits there.

A battery alone is a cushion. It absorbs one hit and then waits for someone else to reload it.

What changes when solar is attached

Add production and the same hardware behaves differently. The battery is no longer a container you fill from the grid — it is the storage layer on a system that generates.

  • It refills itself. Each day of sun recharges the bank. A multi-day outage becomes a cycle rather than a countdown.
  • It works every day. Production offsets consumption year-round, not only during failures.
  • It reduces exposure. Power you produce is power you are not buying at whatever rate is set next.

That is the difference between a cushion and control. One helps you survive an interruption. The other changes your position the rest of the time as well.

The comparison most of our clients have already priced

Many homeowners who call us already own a whole-home generator, or looked hard at one. It is the honest comparison to make, so here it is plainly.

A generator is proven and it does not care whether the sun shone. On a long winter outage it will run as long as it is fed. That is a real advantage and we will not pretend otherwise.

What it asks in return: fuel, whether propane, natural gas, or diesel. Maintenance and exercise cycles. Noise and exhaust while running. A transfer delay when it starts. And it contributes nothing on every day the grid is working — it is insurance, and insurance is pure cost.

Solar with storage inverts that. The transition at grid loss is silent and effectively instantaneous, there is no fuel to source during the event that caused the outage, and the system produces value continuously. Its weakness is the mirror image: sustained heavy overcast reduces what the array can put back, so the design has to account for real conditions rather than ideal ones.

Some homeowners keep both, and that is a perfectly rational answer on a property where an extended winter outage would be genuinely serious.

Sizing is where this is won or lost

The most common failure we see is a system sized to a spec sheet rather than to a house.

A large home is a set of interdependent loads that fail together: heat, well pumps, refrigeration, security, sump. Designing around a shortlist of "critical circuits" is how homeowners end up discovering, mid-outage, which circuits somebody else decided were not critical.

We measure the actual load profile — winter peak, summer peak, well, compressors, standing draw — and size inverter capacity and battery bank to carry the whole service. Conditions in Lancaster and York County

Outages here are rarely a citywide event. They are a tree on a rural line, and the repair queue puts dense neighborhoods first. Properties at the end of a long service run wait longest — common across Lancaster County and in the southern and western reaches of York County.

Those same properties usually have the land for a ground-mount array sized to real demand rather than to available roof. The conditions that make outages worse are frequently the conditions that make production easier.

The question to ask

Not "how many hours will it run?" — that depends on what you are running and what the weather did. Ask instead: do I want something that absorbs one outage, or something that changes my position every day?
