When the Land Is the Better Answer

On properties with acreage, a ground-mount array often outproduces the roof — and leaves the architecture untouched.

There is an assumption built into most residential solar: the array goes on the roof. It is where the industry is set up to work, and on a typical suburban lot it is usually the only option.

On a property with land, that assumption is worth examining rather than inheriting.

Why the roof is often the compromise

A roof was designed to shed water, not to host a power plant. Its pitch, its orientation, and its obstructions were all decided by an architect who was solving a different problem. The result is frequently a set of constraints that no amount of good installation work can overcome:

  • Orientation. The largest, cleanest roof plane frequently faces the wrong direction.
  • Obstructions. Dormers, valleys, chimneys, and vents fragment the usable area into pieces too small to lay out efficiently.
  • Shading. Mature trees near an established home are rarely something anyone is willing to remove.
  • The roof itself. On slate, tile, or standing-seam metal, penetrations are a serious matter — and on a roof with fifteen years left, the array and the roof fall out of sync.

What the land allows

A ground-mount array is placed where production is best, not where the building happens to be. That single freedom resolves most of the constraints above at once:

  • Ideal orientation and tilt. The array is aimed for the site's latitude and its actual sun path.
  • Clear of shading. Sited away from the tree line rather than negotiating with it.
  • Sized to real demand. Not limited to whatever square footage the roof left over — which matters on a home with heavy load, a pool, outbuildings, and vehicles to charge.
  • The roof is untouched. No penetrations, no interaction with the roof's replacement cycle, and nothing visible on a historically or architecturally significant elevation.
  • Serviceable from the ground. Cleaning, inspection, and any future work happen without lifts or roof access.

Where it makes less sense

Honesty requires the other side. Ground mounts need land in the right place — reasonably level, unshaded, and near enough to the service to avoid a punishing conductor run. They involve site work, trenching, and racking that a roof array does not, so the installed cost is typically higher before production is accounted for. Some townships treat them as accessory structures with their own setback and screening requirements.

When the land is wrong, we say so and design for the roof.

How we decide

We model both. Roof and ground are laid out against the same load profile and the same site conditions, and we compare production, cost, and how each option sits with the property. On homes in Lancaster, Berks, and rural Dauphin County, the ground-mount answer wins more often than most homeowners expect. On a tight lot in Lower Merion, it rarely comes up at all.

The point is not that one is better. It is that the property should decide, and the only way to know is to run both.
