The 2027 Window

The residential solar tax credit closed in 2025. A narrower path remains open through 2027 — and it depends entirely on how the system is structured.

July 2026 · 6 min read

For nearly two decades, the federal residential solar tax credit was the simplest part of the conversation. A homeowner bought a system, claimed a credit, and the arithmetic was clean. That era closed at the end of 2025.

What replaced it is narrower and more precise. It is still reachable — but not by the path most homeowners assume, and not by accident. It depends almost entirely on how the system is structured at the outset.

What actually changed

The provision that served direct residential purchases is closed. A homeowner who buys a system outright, in their own name, can no longer reach the credit that was available in prior years. This is the part most people have heard, and it is the part that has caused a number of homeowners to conclude the opportunity is simply gone.

It is not gone. A separate provision remains, and it runs into 2027. It was not written for individual buyers, which is precisely why the structure matters.

Where the prepaid lease fits

Under a prepaid lease, the system is professionally owned for an initial term rather than titled to the homeowner on day one. That ownership structure is what keeps the remaining federal benefit in reach — and the economics of it are passed through in how the system is priced to you.

The shape of it is straightforward:

  • You pay once. A single prepayment covers the system in full. No monthly financing, no escalating payments, no lien carried against the home.
  • Years one through six. The system is professionally owned, monitored, and maintained on your behalf, with production guaranteed. You use the power and nothing else is asked of you.
  • After year six. Ownership transfers to you in full. The system continues producing for decades, and you never make another payment.

The maintenance-free years are not a limitation to be endured. They are white-glove service — a system watched over and held at peak production during the period when commissioning issues, if any exist, would surface. It is handed to you complete.

Why timing is the constraint

The window runs through 2027, but the practical deadline arrives earlier. Engineering, permitting, utility interconnection, and installation take time — more of it on large or complex homes, and more still where a ground-mount array and site work are involved. A system that must be operational within the window has to begin well before the window closes.

This is not urgency for its own sake. It is the ordinary reality of building something well on a fixed calendar.

What to ask your tax advisor

We are not your tax advisor, and we will not tell you what your return will look like. What we can do is describe the structure precisely enough that your advisor can evaluate it. Useful questions:

  • How does a prepaid lease structure interact with my particular tax position?
  • Does the timing of installation and commissioning affect the treatment in my case?
  • Are there state-level considerations in Pennsylvania that apply alongside the federal treatment?

Buck Energy Partners does not provide tax, legal, or accounting advice and does not guarantee any tax outcome. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change. Consult your tax advisor regarding your specific situation. Product availability, guarantees, and terms are described in your consultation and governing agreements.

The honest summary

Most buyers can no longer reach the federal residential credit. Structured correctly through a prepaid lease, qualified homeowners still can, through 2027. Whether it applies to you depends on your circumstances, your property, and your timing — which is exactly the sort of thing worth a direct conversation rather than a web page.
